Company History
The history of this company actually comes with a rather lengthy preface. During the 1998-1999 school year, while attending graduate school (Mechanical Engineering) at Stanford University, I posted my very first web page in the space alotted me by the School of Engineering. It was nothing spectacular but there was definately something magical about being able to post pages on the internet. Within a couple of months I was writing my own html pages and creating simple CGI scripts.
By early 1999 I realized I could turn my personal computer (Pentium II, 266MHz, Windows 95) into a web server, and since on campus housing gave everyone a unique IP address with their high speed internet access, it didn't take long before I was hosting my own sites on my very own server. In April of that year we (my wife and I) left Stanford for a summer internship at IBM in San Jose. With the move came the loss of our high speed internet, our dedicated IP address and of course the ability to host my own sites. At that point I began shopping around for a reasonably priced web host and I soon realized that my search was in vain (web hosting prices were higher back then).
The entrepreneurial spirit seems to run quite strongly in my family, my Dad and brothers have all owned or currently own different businesses. So my first thought was if I couldn't find a decent web host company why not create one. At the time the internet was in a massive state of growth, tech stocks was climbing to new heights every day, nothing could go wrong, this was the beginning of NPS Internet Solutions or NPSIS as we liked to call it. In Aug. 1999 we packed all our possesions into a U-Haul trailer and drove back to Utah with nothing more than a crazy idea and a couple of credit cards.
NPS Internet Solutions was officially organized Sept. 1999, with myself and three other partners. Due to the huge surge in domain speculation and registrations we managed to survive our first year and by Sept. 2000 had even hired two more employees. In 2003 we decided to purchase our own building and moved our operations to Provo, UT. We ran the company successfully for over 7 years and finally in 2006 the decision was made to sell the company. With the sale of NPSIS I took some time off and became more actively involved with the native artwork that I had learned as a youth.
In 2007 we moved to the State of Washington for employment and also because Seattle was the center of the northwest coast native art scene. In my spare time I began working as a professional artist and I once again set up a web server in order to host my site for my new art business: www.wilkersonart.com as well as a few other personal sites for friends and family. My love for web hosting and being a business owner had never really faded and in early 2009 I made the decision to start work on a new hosting company and Medeek Internet Services was born.
The name "Medeek" is Tsimshian for grizzly bear. Medeek is a giant supernatural grizzly bear found in both Tsimshian and Gitxsan legend and is a crest that belongs to the House of Nii'staxo'ok -- Gispwudwada (Killerwhale clan) of the Kitselas (one of the 14 tribes of Tsimshians). Kitselas is at the upper end of Kitselas Canyon about 10 miles upriver from the city of Terrace where I grew up. This area borders the southern territory of the Gitxsan nation of which I am a member of the Lax Gibuu (Wolf clan), House of Amagyet.
